Sharry's Shoe Quilt

I love to hear from quilters who use my patterns and send me photos of their quilts and tell about how they happened to make them.

[And, by the way, if you sent me photos and quilt stories by email from the beginning of 2005 through summer 2005, I had a computer crash and lost a lot of photos and emails. Please contact me again if you sent photos and then did not hear from me that they were published. Email quilting -at- equilters.com ]

I recently received some great photos from Sharry P. of a Shoe Quilt she had made and taken to Israel as a wedding gift.

Here's Sharry's email:

Susan,

I wanted to share with you some not so great pictures of the quilt I made using your shoe pattern. The quilt is great, even if the picture doesn't do it justice. Thanks for the pattern.
I made it as a wedding present for my nephew and his bride who has a real thing for shoes -- all kinds including little ceramic shoes. As soon as they set the wedding date I started working on the quilt using all kinds of scraps, upholstery fabric, lace, trims, charms, beads and buttons. The background is hand pieced of all different pieces of white and off white brocades and other textured fabrics (crazy quilt style) and then cut into the correct size bocks. Then I used small amounts of iron-on adhesive to hold the appliqués down until I attached them by machine using different decorative methods as each shoe "spoke" to me.

I machine quilted hearts and bows on alternating blocks and hand quilted straight rows on the sashing.

On the back I appliquéd different things that would remind my nephew and his wife of me and my family including a map of the New York Subway System (printed on fabric), dinosaurs (for my son), a picture of our apartment building (scanned and printed), and the Statue of Liberty.

I delivered it to them in Tel Aviv last April and I can assure you it is the only one in Israel like it.

I had a ball making the quilt and really appreciate all the advice, patterns and resources your site/column provides.

Thanks,
Sharry

And thanks to you, Sharry! I love the way you embellished and made the blocks extra-interesting. And your photos were just fine!
