Putting the block on point and adding sashing gives a very different look. Plus, the name of the block as "red and white cross" is more obvious on point.

Floating the pinwheels on a dark background and adding stripes
gives a whirling look to the design.
To make the pinwheels really stand out, use a monochrome background. These blocks are on point.

By coloring blocks on the diagonal a very different look can be
achieved. This looks like rotors rather than pinwheels?

Again, stripes add "movement" to the pinwheels. Changing the color of the blades gives a scrappy look.
